When you need to capture transient current signals without breaking the circuit, the Honeywell 1146B AC/DC current probe delivers accurate measurement of currents up to 100 A DC or peak AC. This probe uses hall-effect sensor technology to measure both AC and DC signals across a frequency range of DC to 100 kHz (-3dB with current de-rating). It is compatible with any oscilloscope that has 0.2 to 0.5 V/div sensitivity and 1 MΩ BNC input. The 1146B replaces the discontinued 1146A with the same form fit and functionality.
The Honeywell 1146B offers two sensitivity ranges. At 100 mV/A, it handles up to 10 A DC or peak AC with an accuracy of ±3% of reading for signals ≥50 mA. At 10 mV/A, it measures up to 100 A DC or peak AC with an accuracy of ±4% of reading for 500 mA to 40 A peak, and ±15% maximum at 100 A. The working voltage is 600 V maximum. The probe operates on a 9 V alkaline battery, ensuring portability and ease of use.
The 1146B is ideal for capturing transient current signals in motor controllers, switching power supplies, inverters, and current amplifiers driving inductive loads. Its DC to 100 kHz bandwidth makes it suitable for both power electronics troubleshooting and design verification. The probe's ability to measure DC and AC without breaking the circuit saves time and reduces downtime in industrial environments.
To use the Honeywell 1146B, connect it to your oscilloscope's BNC input and set the oscilloscope to 0.2 to 0.5 V/div sensitivity. Insert the 9 V alkaline battery and select the appropriate sensitivity range (100 mV/A or 10 mV/A) based on the expected current. Clamp the probe around the conductor and verify the waveform on the oscilloscope. Always observe the 600 V maximum working voltage rating and avoid exceeding the peak current limits.
Regularly check the battery status and replace the 9 V alkaline battery as needed to ensure accurate measurements. Inspect the probe cable and connector for wear or damage. Store the probe in a clean, dry environment when not in use. The hall-effect sensor requires no routine calibration, but periodic verification against a known current source is recommended for critical applications.
