When precise temperature measurement is critical in industrial processes, the Allen-Bradley 1794-IT8 delivers reliable performance. This Flex I/O thermocouple and millivolt input module from Rockwell Automation provides eight analog input channels for direct interfacing with a wide range of thermocouple sensors. Part of the Flex I/O family, the 1794-IT8 is designed for modular, distributed control systems where space and flexibility are key.
The 1794-IT8 offers 8 input channels supporting thermocouple types J, K, E, R, N, S, B, C, T, and L, as well as millivolt signals of +/-76.5 mV. It features 16-bit resolution with a data format of 16-bit 2’s complement or offset binary (unipolar), ensuring accurate conversion of analog signals. A single red/green power status indicator on the front panel provides quick visual feedback. The module includes a cold junction compensator (CJC unit, A-B Part Number 969424–0) for precise temperature reference. It mounts on 1794-TB2, -TB3, or -TB3T terminal base units and requires keyswitch position 3 for safe operation.
The 1794-IT8 excels in temperature monitoring and control applications across industries such as chemical processing, food and beverage, and power generation. For example, in a furnace control system, it can directly connect to Type B thermocouples for measuring temperatures up to 1800°C. In environmental chambers, it handles Type T sensors for low-temperature monitoring down to -195°C. The millivolt input capability also allows connection to pressure transducers and other instruments with non-standard output signals, making it a versatile choice for mixed-signal environments.
Before inserting the 1794-IT8 module, rotate the keyswitch on the terminal base to Position 3 to ensure proper mounting and operation. The module communicates with the PLC via block transfer programming, which moves input data words and configuration words between the module’s memory and the PLC’s data table. Use the 1794-TB2, -TB3, or -TB3T terminal base units for physical mounting. The module accepts both grounded and ungrounded thermocouples. For accurate readings, ensure the cold junction compensator is correctly installed in the designated position on the terminal base.
The 1794-IT8 is compatible with any available Flex I/O communication adapter, allowing seamless integration into Rockwell Automation control systems. It works with PLCs that support block transfer operations, such as ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers. The module’s 20 mA FlexBus current draw ensures low power consumption while maintaining reliable data exchange. For system expansion, multiple 1794-IT8 modules can be combined with other Flex I/O modules in a single rack.
When selecting the 1794-IT8, verify that your system supports block transfer programming and that the terminal base unit matches your installation needs. The module requires a 24V DC power supply (not included) and a compatible communication adapter. For cold junction compensation, order the A-B CJC unit 969424–0 separately if not already included. BluePLC Industrial offers the 1794-IT8 with fast shipping and expert support. For complete technical specifications, please contact BluePLC Industrial.
