When your process demands accurate temperature monitoring, the Allen-Bradley 1794-IR8 Flex I/O RTD Input Module delivers reliable performance. This 8-channel analog input module converts resistance from RTD sensors into digital data for your control system. It belongs to the Rockwell Automation Flex I/O family, designed for distributed I/O applications where space is limited and flexibility is key.
The 1794-IR8 offers a 16-bit resolution across 435 ohms, ensuring fine-grained temperature readings. It accepts nominal input ranges from 1 to 433 ohms, covering a wide variety of RTD sensors. The module provides a normal mode noise rejection of -60 dB at 60 Hertz, which helps filter out electrical interference in industrial environments. Its channel bandwidth ranges from 0 to 2.62 Hertz, suitable for slowly changing temperature signals. The system throughput in normal mode is 325 milliseconds when scanning one channel, programmable down to 28 milliseconds per channel. For eight channels, the default scan time is 2.6 seconds. In enhanced mode, throughput ranges from 56 to 650 milliseconds per channel. The 1794-IR8 operates on a FlexBus current of 20 mA and dissipates 3 Watts at 31.2 Volts DC maximum, with thermal dissipation of 10.2 BTU/hour at the same voltage.
Temperature monitoring is critical in many industries. The 1794-IR8 excels in applications such as:
Process Control: Monitor reactor temperatures in chemical plants using Pt100 RTDs. The module's 16-bit resolution captures small temperature changes, improving process stability.
HVAC Systems: Track air handling unit temperatures with nickel RTDs. The module's noise rejection ensures accurate readings even near motors and variable frequency drives.
Food & Beverage: Monitor oven or pasteurizer temperatures with copper RTDs. The wide sensor support allows one module to handle multiple temperature ranges.
Mount the 1794-IR8 on a standard DIN rail. It requires a compatible terminal base: 1794-TB2, 1794-TB3, or 1794-TB3T. Wire size is determined by the installed terminal base, so refer to the terminal base documentation for proper wire gauge. Connect RTD sensors to the appropriate channels, ensuring correct wiring for 2-, 3-, or 4-wire configurations as supported by the terminal base. The module operates in ambient temperatures from 0 to 55 °C (32 to 131 °F) and can be stored from -40 to 85 °C (-40 to 185 °F). It withstands vibration of 5g at 10 to 500 Hz and operating shock of 30 g.
The 1794-IR8 integrates seamlessly with Allen-Bradley control systems via the Flex I/O backplane. It communicates with controllers such as ControlLogix, CompactLogix, and SLC 500 using the appropriate communication adapters (e.g., 1794-AENT for EtherNet/IP). The module supports both normal and enhanced operating modes, selectable via configuration software like RSLogix 5000 or Studio 5000. Data format is 16-bit 2's complement or offset binary (unipolar), making integration straightforward.
Before purchasing the 1794-IR8, verify that your system supports Flex I/O modules and that you have the correct terminal base (1794-TB2, 1794-TB3, or 1794-TB3T). Confirm the RTD sensor types you need—the module supports platinum (Pt), nickel (Ni), and copper (Cu) sensors with various alpha values.
