When high-speed pulse counting and frequency measurement are critical for precise position or speed control, the ABB DP820 delivers reliable performance. This two-channel pulse counting module connects incremental pulse transmitters operating up to 1.5 MHz, supporting RS422, +5 V, +12 V, +24 V, and 13 mA signal levels. Each channel includes a bidirectional 29-bit counter for position/length accumulation and a frequency measurement function covering 0.25 Hz to 1.5 MHz. Designed for the S800 I/O system, the DP820 works with Module Termination Units TU810V1, TU812V1, TU814V1, TU830V1, and TU833.
The DP820 offers individually isolated channels with channel-to-channel and circuit common isolation. Input impedance on the digital input is 2.5 kΩ. Maximum field cable length reaches 200 meters (218 yards), allowing flexible installation. Rated insulation voltage is 50 V, with a dielectric test voltage of 500 V AC. Power dissipation is 2.5 W, and current consumption on the +5 V Modulebus is 120 mA. The module supports a wide operating temperature range of 0 to +55 °C (+32 to +131 °F) and storage from -40 to +70 °C (-40 to +158 °F). It carries CE marking, complies with electrical safety standards EN 61010-1 and UL 61010-1, and holds hazardous location approvals including ATEX Zone 2 and cULus for Class I Division 2 and Zone 2. Marine certifications from ABS, BV, DNV, and LR are also included. Protection class is IP20 per IEC 60529.
In packaging and material handling, the DP820 tracks conveyor belt position and speed using incremental encoders, ensuring accurate cut-to-length or fill operations. For machine tool spindles, the module measures rotational speed and position feedback, supporting closed-loop control. Its ability to simultaneously count pulses and measure frequency makes it ideal for applications requiring both absolute position and real-time velocity data, such as in printing presses or textile machinery.
Mount the DP820 onto a compatible S800 MTU like TU810V1 or TU830V1. Use shielded twisted-pair cables for pulse transmitter connections to minimize noise, keeping total cable length under 200 meters. Configure the module via the control system software, selecting the appropriate interface type (RS422, 5 V, 12 V, or 24 V) and setting the measurement time for frequency accuracy. The front panel LEDs—Pulse X, UP, ST, DI, SY, DO, and TP—provide per-channel status for quick verification during commissioning.
Routine inspection of the DP820 should focus on verifying LED status and checking for module error or channel warning indications. The module operates reliably in environments with pollution degree 2 and relative humidity from 5% to 95% non-condensing. Corrosion protection meets ISA-S71.04 G3 class. For vertical mounting in compact MTUs, the maximum ambient temperature reduces to 40 °C (104 °F). Regular cleaning of the enclosure with a dry cloth and ensuring proper airflow around the module helps maintain long service life.
The DP820 integrates seamlessly with ABB S800 I/O systems, connecting via Modulebus to any compatible controller. Use it with MTU models TU810, TU812, TU814, TU830, or TU833. The module supports HART, SOE, redundancy, high integrity, and intrinsic safety configurations—all set to "No" for this standard version. The keying code is CB, ensuring correct insertion into the backplane. No additional communication protocols are required beyond the standard S800 architecture.
Before ordering, verify that your system uses S800 I/O and that the MTU matches the DP820's requirements. Confirm the pulse transmitter interface type (RS422, 5 V, 12 V, or 24 V) to ensure compatibility. The DP820 article number is 3BSE013228R1.
